Indian Government has won the trust vote. The ruling UPA scraped through with 275 votes in favour and 256 against. Just before the motion, there was a furour in the house when three BJP MPs showed bundles and bundles of cash offered to abstain or vote in favour of the Congress.
It seems that there was some self-interest governing few members who cross voted. For BJP, Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, Manjunath, Sombhai Patel, Babubhai Katara, Chandrabhan Singh, Haribhau Rathod and Sangliana voted in favour of the UPA and against NDA.
Two MPs from JD(U), three MPs from BJD and one Akali Dal MP also voted in favour of the Congress.
One MP from BJP and one MP from Shiv Sena were missing in the voting session.
In all these 15 people could have made the decisive difference. If they had voted as they were supposed to, the result would have been a 261 - 260 defeat for UPA.
This would be remembered as the most controversial vote of confidence ever. There were numerous allegations and hints of corruption, poaching, favours and using money power.
Thankfully, it is all over now. Congress has retained the record of surviving all trust votes so far.
