Hong Kong: Response to media enquiries on the statement by the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data issued today

In response to media enquiries about the statement made by the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (the Privacy Commissioner) that he does not intend to seek re-appointment for a second term, a Government spokesman said today (March 3), The term of appointment of the incumbent Privacy Commissioner, Mr Roderick Woo, will expire on July 31, 2010. During his tenure, Mr Woo has made a very important contribution to the protection of personal data privacy in Hong Kong. In particular, he has taken steps to strengthen the enforcement of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) and initiated inspection of major personal data systems of concern to the public in order to facilitate their compliance with the PDPO. He has also conducted a comprehensive review of the PDPO having regard to developments in the last decade. We are very grateful to Mr Woo for his contribution.

We respect the decision of Mr Woo for not seeking re-appointment. As for matters relating to the appointment of the next Privacy Commissioner, we will announce the details shortly.
